The 9×39mm is a specialised Soviet rifle cartridge developed for suppressed, subsonic performance in military firearms. Originally designed for use in AK-based platforms, it fires heavy 9mm projectiles at subsonic velocities, providing excellent terminal performance while maintaining extremely low sound signatures when paired with suppressors. Its unique combination of heavy bullets and low velocity has made it one of the most respected suppressed rifle cartridges ever developed.

In recent years, the 9×39mm has gained popularity outside its military origins, with a growing number of manufacturers producing AR-platform barrels, complete uppers, and factory rifles chambered for the cartridge. Some firearms, particularly those built around earlier or non-standard chamber designs, may experience headspacing or compatibility issues. Starline recommends consulting your barrel or firearm manufacturer to confirm compatibility before use.

Warning: Firearms fitted with floating firing pins, including AR-platform rifles and similar designs, should always be loaded from the magazine rather than by dropping the bolt on a chambered round. This reduces the risk of a slam fire by allowing the bolt to lose inertia as it strips a cartridge from the magazine. Starline also recommends using primers appropriate for firearms with floating firing pin designs, as more sensitive primers may increase the likelihood of a slam fire.
