The .50-70 Government is one of America's earliest metallic rifle cartridges, originally adopted by the U.S. Army in 1866 for the Springfield "Trapdoor" rifle. Designed for black powder, it played an important role in the transition from muzzle-loading to breech-loading military firearms and quickly gained a reputation for dependable performance on both the battlefield and in the hunting fields of the American frontier.

Although long considered obsolete, the .50-70 Government has experienced a strong revival thanks to the growing popularity of Black Powder Cartridge Rifle (BPCR) competition, Cowboy Action Shooting, and historic firearm collecting. Its impressive heritage, excellent accuracy, and suitability for traditional black powder loads continue to make it a favourite among enthusiasts of classic American rifles.
